---|---|
Because my mother died of complications from her weight | NPU 4 |
I believe that my community does not know enough about pollution. Noise pollution especially is pervasive in my neighborhood. |
NPU 7 |
I have heart disease. It's the number one killer of women, surpassing cancer. People don't understand that a lot of lifestyle choices can prevent it |
NPU 6 |
We have a very diverse community - mental health issues are important because of excessive stress, isolation of elderly / We have lots of young people who engage in unhealthy behaviors regarding alcohol use / We live in a very urban area and pedestrians and bicycles are competing with cars |
NPU 5 |
A Our Black community needs more resources and eduction | NPU 1 |
Mental health influences the choices that result in many of the other listed issues. Violence and pregnancy have more drastic, short term consequences versus diet, nutrition, environmental health, etc. |
NPU 1 |
Type 2 Diabetes is at epidemic levels in the Black community. It is preventable and can be reversed. I have Type 1 Diabetes and have no option out of being insulin dependant but Type 2 can be prevented. Environmental problems are all over our area due to Perkins recylcle plant polluting our streams and the excess of car repair and tire shops. Nutritional health education can help the community be educated about healthy options and demand more from the convenient stores and lack of retail options in the area. |
NPU 2 |
seems to be on the rise much less educational info than before | NPU 3 |
Need to know not taught prevention | NPU 1 |
There are quite a few homes in the neighborhood that sells drugs and it hurting the young, as well as the older people living in the area. When drugs are being sold, there will be a high rate of violence in the area, which bring down the community. The people are more concern with obtaining drugs, than they are about their health or the health and education of their children. They are not concern about how the neighborhood looks, therefore the community starts to look rundown and becomes a blight area. |
NPU 4 |
These topics are important to me because it's some of the leading cause of death in this area. | NPU 6 |
Cancer just took my husband within 2 months of diagnosis. He was fit & ate good food. I believe environmental issues in my community lends itself to cancer, |
NPU 2 |
Spread of HIV is on the rise in my community. / Men's health is still ignored in my community, machismo, ignorance and limited resources / Substance abuse is a mitigating factor in my community along with the permissive attitude about drug/alcohol use |
NPU 7 |
It seems as though more and more people have asthma. | NPU 6 |
NPU 6 | |
I have Rheumatoid arthritis | NPU 1 |
Asthma affects too many children. Substance abuse, including alcohol, are too wide spread. Obesity is a sign of public health and private health failures. |
NPU 6 |
The health issues I chose are on the increase in urban settings. They effect everyone in the community not just one particular group. |
NPU 1 |
these issues impact persons lives | NPU 1 |
african american accountf or a disproportionately large percentage of those diseases | NPU 1 |
Poor Nutrition leads to obesity which leads to health issues/disease which leads to depression which leads to violence and so on. / Members of the Mechanicsville neighborhood witness a great deal of violence. It is a disease within the community. / Delaying pregnancy is often connected to success in life. |
NPU 1 |
They impact my community the most | NPU 1 |
In my community we have a high rate of asthma, substandard housing with mold is an ussue | NPU 1 |
In the Mechanicsville community our kids rate high for asthma, I notice mental health id a factor in the City view Apartment, and women's health is an on going need to be address |
NPU 1 |
Nutrition affects all areas of health and is rarely discussed. / Mental health is neglected and those who suffer with it, and their families often have to cope by themselves. / The causes of substance abuse and prevention are also neglected. |
NPU 2 |
Impact on community & self. | NPU 1 |
NUTRITION: Our diets affect almost all the other issues cited. When we learn how to eat more healthily and actually eat more healthily, we can halt most of the adverse conditions listed. People must come to learn and believe that eating better--much more fruits and vegetables and much less prepare/packaged food AND less red meat--will lead to better health. Ill health is not simply "a crap shoot"; It's what we do to ourselves. / OBESITY: Totally linked to nutrition and is the primary effect of bad nutrition and leads to many |
NPU 2 |
It’s a predominantly African American community and high blood pressure is a silent killer among our people / Obesity is also another big concern. Obese parents are passing it down to the youth. / There’s a lot of residents with undiagnosed mental health issues. You see them walking down the street talking to themselves. People just view them as crazy and don’t want to deal with them but they need help as well |
NPU 6 |
Family history and lack of alternative transportation put me at risk of things like diabetes and heart disease. Also, it's amazing to me that Fulton Co is not smoke free. What is wrong with us??? |
NPU 6 |
These are some health issues that I believe to be present in our community. | NPU 4 |
Mental health is highly misunderstood and leads to social inequality regarding jobs and health insurance. Obesity is prevalent in the areas I work and the lack of grocery stores there is no wonder that it is an issue. Substance abuse is grossly underestimated in its lethality in our city. |
NPU 6 |
I chose Mental health because very so often do I see it regarded as a rich person problem. / Men’s health because I know men don’t seek out health problems fast enough. / And nutrition because we’re surrounded by so many unhealthy options |
NPU 6 |
STD because of the high rate here. / Vilonence because of the gun shots. / Mental Health because of the constant oppression. |
NPU 7 |
Mental health because so many people are affected but it is rarely discussed. Unaddressed mental health and trauma puts people at risk for everything from losing their job to hurting their families to engaging in unsafe behaviors with sex or drugs. Environmental quality because we could be more vigilant about hazards in our community. Traffic safety because we tolerate the constant engangerment of our children and residents without prioritizing safer streets and drivers. |
NPU 1 |
Close to family | NPU 6 |
These are important in my community because they are not talked about, but have some of the biggest impact on people’s health and community. Not only do these issues hurt the community physically, but disable us from being able to be socially mobile. |
NPU 6 |
Mental health in the Black community needs to be addressed because I believe we could eliminate most problems if our mental health overall was better. |
NPU 6 |
Longer qualities of life | NPU 3 |
Diabetes is a common disease that people are not aware and because we are in a food desert, our neighborhood is more prone to diabetes. Also there are a lot of homeless people are who always drinking at the corner store. |
NPU 5 |
Cancer has been one of our major silent killers...prevention and information on risk factors is essential in my opinion. High Blood Pressure is extremely dangerous and ties in to the poor nutrition that can be cultural in the black community. |
NPU 7 |
Violence is a major issue, people need mental health services there is a high homeless group, and people will buy junk food for breakfast in this community - not all but many |
NPU 7 |
Due to the # of children | NPU 1 |
Atlanta has been seeing a rise in HIV/AIDS, which is a preventable disease! With the knowledge we have of HIV, we should not see any new infections of the disease at all- if people know how to prevent it, we can stop it! / / Environmental health seems largely ignored in public health literature but something that effects my neighborhood- we have many illegal dumping sights here (thankfully most are no longer active thanks to city action) and we have more than one brownfield. I do not believe residents have the knowledge they need about health and these issues. / / Drug abuse is blamed for several crime related problems in our community. I believe we could help solve some of these problems by teaching residents how we can help. |
NPU 2 |
Nutrition- lack of community resources for healthy nutritional food items. Too many fast food restaurants, based on economic level of neighborhood. / Violence - lack of safety and police presence. Lack of community code enforcement to detour blight and opportunity for birthing crime and criminal activity. / Substance Abuse - lack of safe, educational and welcoming activities for youth and residents. Lack of relationships with community youth to explore rewarding and gratifying ideas and discoveries. / |
NPU 6 |
For the population in this community, these three are common and often misunderstood | NPU 6 |
Bad air | NPU 1 |
I see mental health as related to many other community related issues. IE poverty, nutrition, violence, homelessness, drug use, crime, etc / I see Violence playing out in the community all the time. In schools, in homes, on the streets. Its a major issue and can have long term effects for the victims of violence. Lastly living in a formerly industrial city near highways and railroad tracks as well as abandoned factories there are a lot of polluted areas and areas with air quality issues that can affect long term health. |
NPU 1 |
they kill | NPU 7 |
Because I would like to know how to prevent them from getting wrose | NPU 6 |
Observation of neighbors using medical devices to help them breathe, walk and talk. Most stated they suffer from asthma or emphysema or COPD. |
NPU 6 |
Environmental health - lots of cars, trucks, trains, planes generate combustion pollution and particulate matter and we're exposed to this stuff all the time since we're in the city 100% of the time / Mental health - important issue that is often overlooked / nutrition - not a lot of access to organic and fresh foods in our neighborhood / / |
NPU 2 |
Obesity: At the root of many other chronic health problems (Diabetes, Cardiovascular Health, etc.) / HIV/AIDS: Still not enough supports and education in the community about prevention and treatment. / Addiction/Abuse: Challenging issues to confront and more education and support needed. |
NPU 1 |
STD's are a huge problem in the city of Atlanta and are not discussed / Diabetes has many causes and causes many problems. / Asthma causes missed school days and that causes more problems |
NPU 3 |
The three closest neighborhoods to mine are situated between several former industrial sites at least two have been EPA condemned. Access to greenspace has been proven to extend and enhance quality of life. We also lack access to proper nutrition. There are no specialty healthfood stores. There is only one grocery for the closest seven neighborhoods and they lack a robust healthfood and nutritional supplement section. There is limited access to cost effective and quality health food. These are simple preventive healthcare measures that can greatly impact my community and they cost virtually nothing! |
NPU 2 |
They are important because they are the three that are most visible in my community. I see a lot of littering a lot of obesity and a lot of kids having children |
NPU 7 |
Violence prevention/education could have a positive impact in community, schools. Mental health is so common in the community. Most who suffer rarely leave the community! Men's health could possibly increase employability of many of the men in the community. |
NPU 7 |
My neighborhood has a high rate of HV and sexually transmitted diseases which is impacting the stability and development of our young people. In addition, low incomes cause them to neglect their health. |
NPU 7 |
Cancer - lack of appropriate treatment and supports available to people with little, no or not adequate services. |
NPU 2 |
Mental health is stigmatized in my community. Getting help and seeing a doctor to talk things out should not be seen as negative. / It is important to seek regular health exams because even if we take care of ourselves we can still get sick and early detection is the best medicine. / Littering is a large part of pollution in my neighborhood. People should understand that it causes heath issues as well. |
NPU 2 |
One main reason, New Years resolution, plus having issues myself. | NPU 6 |
tHESE ARE THE PROBLEMS/ISSUES THAT PLAGUE OUR COMMUNITY. | NPU 2 |
Too many young people suffer | NPU 1 |
Mental health is a concern because of the growing number of homeless people that I see on the streets of NPU-X. Obesity has people on the path to a short life span and a poor quality of life as they age. |
NPU 2 |
One main reason, New Years resolution, plus having issues myself. | NPU 6 |
tHESE ARE THE PROBLEMS/ISSUES THAT PLAGUE OUR COMMUNITY. | NPU 2 |
Too many young people suffer | NPU 1 |
It is my understanding that there is a silent HIV/AIDS epidemic, and therefore I feel like there needs to be more awareness. There are also too many "babies" having babies, and this will continue to make it a greater challenge for especially poor people to climg the socio-economic ladder. |
NPU 7 |
Mental health is a concern because of the growing number of homeless people that I see on the streets of NPU-X. Obesity has people on the path to a short life span and a poor quality of life as they age. |
NPU 2 |
They are too prevalent in this community | NPU 1 |
Asthma runs in my family both sides. | NPU 2 |
Poor mental health can make a person more vulnerable to adopt self-destructive habits. / / I hear gunshots in the neighborhood a couple of times a month, and I have neighbors who are alcoholics but want to quit. / |
NPU 2 |
The Community consists primarily of senior citizens. | NPU 4 |
They seem to be more prevalent. | NPU 4 |
Poor mental health has a domino effect on every other facet of a person's life. It's the foundation for living a healthy successful life. We live in a food dessert with more fast food restaurants than fresh healthy produce. In many ways our community encourages unhealthy eating as fast food is more affordable and easy to get. There needs more of an awareness campaign around sources for affordable and healthy foods like Alumna farm which is close and accepts EBT. So many of my neighbors are over weight. Obesity is a hard condition to hide. / As for teen pregnancy, this is a national problem as we do not offer comprehensive sex education in schools. I see so many young children and babies in our neighborhood. I want to make sure young girls and boys have access to evidence based research and birth control so as to prevent unplanned pregnancy. |
NPU 2 |
These are all killers, people need to get checkups and be informed of the health and risk challenges. | NPU 5 |
I am an R.N and diabetes educator. There is knowledge deficits when it comes to the prevention. | NPU 6 |
I chose Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Cancer because these are the silent killers among the African American community, the things that attack us that no one wants to, or they shy away from discussing. |
NPU 7 |
Nutrition, Diabetes & women's health are interrelated. Women predominantly control food selection for their households& influence lifelong eating patterns in their children. Those eating patterns determine overall health & weight. Overweight then begins a cascade of issues, including diabetes. |
NPU 7 |
Due to the lack of healthy food options in walking distance and our convenience to many fast food options, diabetes and high blood pressure might impact many residents. You can easily walk to the liquor store, Wendy's, or the gas station. In regards to mental health, I think many of our younger residents may suffer from them possibly due to over-crowding apartments and unstable households. These issues are important because I know this community can be better and with the right partners, these issues will be eliminated. |
NPU 3 |
'-Young girls need to understand the responsibility that comes along with being a mother / -People need to understand the different types of sexually transmitted diseases there are, and the symptoms that come along with them / -People need to understand the implications of high blood pressure |
NPU 3 |
Many people in the community have generational high blood pressure and diabetics. Obesity based on lack of exercise and poor nutrition leads to many diseases |
NPU 4 |
I am over all concerned about the health of women in the community | NPU 3 |
People are taking these issues too lightly. | NPU 2 |
Because I have raised my family in the metropolitan area since 1995 !! And in this community there have been limited resources. |
NPU 6 |
I see so many people suffering with diabetes and this disease takes a toll on the entire body. AIDS is being ignored but it is spreading fast and its hurting everyone but no one wants to talk about it. very sad. Cancer because this took so many of my family members. / |
NPU 6 |
I don't feel like young boys/girls have much access to condoms in the community. Domestic violence is something I see every now and then and would like to see some preventative measures taken. Heart disease impacts many people I assume given the lack of healthy food. |
NPU 3 |
1. Women's Issues...providing education on and support for women's medical issues goes directly to the heart of the most medically underserved community, and has the greatest benefit per dollar spent. The medical issues of women affect the primary caretakers, primary parent, least paid and most encumbered person in our communities. / 2. Nutrition. Good nutrition is a vital and missing component of preventative care in our community. By providing it early, and teaching it at a layperson level, we can attack diabetes, atherosclerosis, stroke and so many other disorders before they begin. / 3. Obesity is again, something which educating about, dealing with, and focusing on, provided a great deal of value-added impacts to adjacent and related illnesses. |
NPU 7 |

Mental health is chronically under addressed. Asthma relates to our deteriorating air quality as our tree cover continues to be cut back. Violence prevention helps all of us. |
NPU 3 |

NPU 7 |
Violence prevention- there is a high rate of crime in our community, obesity and diabetes -would like to see improved programs for people in this community regarding this issue. |
NPU 6 |
diabetes, HBP and obesity are the precursors to high incidence of heart attics and strokes | |
a lot of people suffering + hear it on the radio | |
a lot of people dont know, need to know about cancer and nutrition. Really dont know they have it |
NPU 7 |
a lot of people dying and getting sick | NPU 7 |
most important | NPU 7 |
Diabetes is very prevalent in the black community and Diabetes leads to other very serious illnesses. More education on prevention should be made available to help combat this disease. / / Heart Disease affects many women and may not present itself until it's too late. / / Mental Health is very rampart and a lot of people are ashamed to admit when they need help. |
NPU 4 |
1) Diabetes: The number 1 problem in the black population / 2) High Blood Pressure: The number 2 problem in the black population / 3) Substance Abuse: It is a DRUG epidemic in the black neighborhood |
NPU 4 |
mental health is overlooked in our community aids/hiv is rising I our youngsters | |
because everyone needs to know about the different diseases so that can know what to do in order to prevent them and the violence is out of hand |
NPU 6 |
high blood pressure- I have HBP, cancer- my father died from colon cancer | NPU 7 |
I dont think nutritious meals are very common in my neighborhood. I dont think mental illness are addressed enough I think diabetes has increased a lot over the last few years and as I mentioned I dont think my neighbors are eating very well. |
NPU 6 |
cancer because its wide spreads everywhere. A lot of it has to do with overweight. Obesity- is one of the factors that lead to other health issues so being able to address obesity will also address health issues. Diabetes- diet again obesity leads the way. portion sizes |

NPU 7 |
maintain a healty life | NPU 7 |
I have several neighbors that are clueless about enviromental health. They dont care about recycling at all I am concerend |
NPU 7 |
Proper nutrition is the base of preventing a lot of health related issues. Mental health is something we don't talk about enough plus cancer #'s are rising |
NPU 6 |

All three have a much broader effect than people realize | NPU 3 |
Mental health is ignored. Violence is bad in the area | NPU 3 |
I think more people have mental health issues then we realize. There are a lot of environmental factors at play in our community. |
NPU 3 |
Litter, tires leave stagnant water which leads to unwanted health issues. Children in the neighborhood eat junk food because it's inexpensive and not getting the nutrients they need for a healthy today. Substance abuse leads to crime. |

I grew u in a poverty sticken home and knew nothing about nutrition. In turn, I have been sick most of my life with auto immune and get problem ss that can be fixed and prevented by proper nutrition. First high blood pressure, it runs in famlies and we generally have a high salt diet. Obesity, we don't wat well enouthg and get enough ercise and metal health goes unchecked and untreated in black communities. |

lack of access to healthy food | NPU 4 |
The causes are lack of awareness of the problem; lack of options for a change; media images that sanitize the dangers of pollution. |
NPU 7 |
Lack of education. Lack of access to affordable organic food. And stress because of poverty and poor quality schools |
NPU 6 |
Excessive stress - long commutes / working too hard for too little money / too much traffic and drivers abusing and ignoring pedestrians |
NPU 5 |
Lack of Knowing or Resources / Money / Fear | NPU 6 |
Cyclical Poverty- low income, poor access to quality education, jobs and transit. | NPU 3 |

Lack of education | NPU 4 |
Lack of education and resources available in the black neighborhoods. There's a food dessert of getting healthy and affordable nutritious food. The fear of being accosted and shot by the police and the lack of empathy from other races. The current president and political leaders in power don't seem to care about the least of these. |
NPU 4 |
Being black in the surrounding neighborhoods and not being educated about these health issues | NPU 4 |
ignorance, oppression, racial bias and poverty | NPU 7 |
I think the causes of these health issues is due to lack of knowledge and education given | NPU 6 |
Cancer--lead in water & nearby factories. Too many gas stations & automotive businesses that don't get rid of old engines & other auto parts in a healthy way. Diabetes--choosing unhealthy foods laden with salt. Few nearby restaurants with healthy food choices. Obesity--food islands without fresh food. |
NPU 2 |
Poverty / oppression / lack of education/information / | NPU 7 |
Environmental, GMO foods, fluoride in water | NPU 6 |
NPU 6 | |
Food, poor eating | NPU 1 |
Mis-education, non-compliance with medical recommendations and lack of resources. Lack of easily available healthy food choices. |
NPU 6 |
I think the lack of adequate education on these health issues cause citizens to ignore them and/or deny that they could fall in the heath group effected by these health issues. I also think having to deal with the effects of the health issues after a crisis is the way most people are handling health concerns. |
NPU 1 |
eating habits | NPU 1 |
lack of education, access to quality resources and a community of encouragement | NPU 1 |
Mechanicsville is a food desert. There are several places to get unhealthy food, but no where to get whole food options. The education and economic level of area could be improved. |
NPU 1 |
Lack of knowledge/education, lack of alternative healthier food choice options in local area. Mechanicsville is not a walk-able community. |
NPU 1 |
Mold and parking lots. | NPU 1 |
stress | NPU 1 |
Poverty, lack of information, lack of interest in medical/pharmaceutical industry. | NPU 2 |
Lack of education, and/or unfortunate family circumstances. | NPU 1 |
I have stated these above in my rather detailed explanations. | NPU 2 |
Finances. People can’t afford their blood pressure meds or don’t have insurance to begin with. We all know it’s much cheaper to eat unhealthy than healthy, leasing to obesity. | NPU 6 |
Lack of Marta and bike lanes | NPU 6 |
Low doctor visits | NPU 4 |
LACK OF RESOURCES | NPU 6 |
Lack of resources like money and time. | NPU 6 |

Lack of mental health knowledge plays a major part. Also the history of the Black community plays a part on mental health. |
NPU 6 |
Lack of food choices within close proximity of residents. Lack of education and income. Cultural habits and years of traditional life styles of eating certain food choices. | NPU 3 |
food desert community / | NPU 5 |
Poor eating habits and reckless behaviors (smoking, heavy alcohol consumption) & lack of knowledge | NPU 7 |
Lack of education and exposure | NPU 7 |
Nutrition | NPU 1 |
I think there are two main causes- one being lack of knowledge. I do not believe that my community is fully aware of the resources to help with addiction problems. The other being a lack of resources. My neighborhood is not wealthy and many of our community members cannot afford or do not have time to become aware of solutions for these problems. |
NPU 2 |
Non-involvement by local and community representatives. Where economic base is low or non-existent interest and participation in those areas are null and void. Long history of no concern for residents, businesses and economic development. Racial makeup along with low househould income biggest factor. |

Eatting the wrong foods | NPU 6 |
Most stated early tobacco use, alcohol and drug abuse at an early age. | NPU 6 |
lack of communication to the community and not enough investment in our community for organic, farm fresh food that is not expensive |
NPU 2 |
Systemic health disparities in access and treatment options. | NPU 1 |
Lack of education | NPU 3 |
I think race plays is the primary factor. Many of these neighborhoods were undervalued because of the proximity to manufacturing and railroads and thus populated by mainly PoC for the better part of the 20th century. There has been little investment in these neighborhoods and it follows that quality parks and groceries would not operate in an area where they are not incentivized to do so. Money is also an important factor in access to healthcare as well as preventitive measures like a well balanced diet or the leisure to exercise. It's no secret that these neighborhoods are overwhelmingly poor and black wish unfortunately puts people at the intersection of a HOST of medical problems. |
NPU 2 |
Lack of Parental Guidance and lack of Education | NPU 7 |
Lack of knowledge of what is available or where to get efficient assistance. Transportation. TRUST in healthcare provider/program |

Lack of adequate mental health support. Poor diet choices with regards to obesity. | NPU 2 |
Lack of information | NPU 1 |
Poverty. Lack of education. | NPU 7 |
Pollution and mass traffic (too much car exhaust) definitely affects me!! | NPU 2 |
Prevention or treatment may be difficult to access due to lack of knowledge of community resources, if any, but also cultural stigmas. |
NPU 2 |
Improper nutrition, lack of nutrition education, and/or lack of adequate in-home care. | NPU 4 |
Ignorance in dealing with them. | NPU 4 |
Lack of educational resources/awareness. Cultural barriers. Financial barriers. | NPU 2 |
People aren't getting checked. | NPU 5 |
Lack of education. | NPU 6 |
Lack of knowledge / Lack of discussion / Lack of awareness / Lack of exposure | NPU 7 |
Poor education on healthy food selection & how to eat well on a limited income. Also poor prenatal food & health choices. |
NPU 7 |
Similar to my above response, living in an area where walking to healthy food options is non-existent and over-crowded housing is prevalent, these are surely the causes. | NPU 3 |

I think more clinics in the neighborhood should be available, esp. to residents on a limited income or who are uninsured. I'd love to see more grocery stores which carry health conscious options at a reasonable price (not Whole Foods) and within walking distance.I'd like to see MARTA expanded and people choose public transit/walking/biking over driving. I'd love to see gentrification work to improve the neighborhood and bring about positive health changes and not force people to relocate to areas that lack these positive social/health services. I'd love for health professionals to be more visible in the community (school/church visits, partnerships w/ the NPU for community events etc). |

I know there are public service announcements given on television regarding health issues, but they are not seen by many citizens. There should be many more ways of disseminating information. |

I have owned in this neighborhood for 18 years. There has been promise of the neighborhood improving from the first day that I moved in. The economy tanked afterward. The city, community, neighborhood leadership did not work in the favor of the neighborhood's health and improvement. There have been starts and stops of development, but we are drug infested and the schools continue to fail our students. Parents aren't engaged and I don't know of schools encouraging, inviting or demanding involvement. While I don't support incentives for good parentlng, perhaps that is something that could be done. I don't know. It's very much systemic and at a higher level to be worked out and through. |

They are all linked together. Systemic racism has drained wealth, resources, and services, leaving us with underfunded schools full of stressed children. Homes lose value and we cannot afford to maintain them or our public assets. Without wealth or political influence, harmful conditions are dumped on us for other people's benefit - highways speed between our neighborhoods so people who can afford cars can get to work faster, while our neighbors can barely get across the street safely to catch a bus or train. |

ATVs and speeding cars on residential streets are a big concern; litter and trash on the streets are concerns too. |
Arthritis is a problem in the community |
Concern about the youth they need skills then own there own business. A new mind set. for a helping each other and owning our good and bad habits. to change for a healthy life. |
Continued outreach to all types. Add groups of people/schools/rent office/flyers/street corners. |
Educate |
Engage better with neighborhood organizations, involvement, sponsorship, etc. |
Food insecurity is a major issue |
I want to address displacement/homelessness throught metro atlants particularly college or vacational students who experinced it |
HEALTHY EATING-COOKING CALSSES, RESTAURANTS WITH SALAD BARS OR HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES |
Lack of insurance for unemployed that do not qualify for medicaid |
Have an urgent care facility in the neighborhood. Have neighborhood clean up days and enforce discouraging people from dumping trash/tires in the neighborhood. Make sure the water treatment plant nearby, stops having failures and then the smell lingers throughout the area. |
I hope we can protect access to health ease for all our neighborhoods and increase awaness of violence as real health issues |
I think it would be better to focus intensely on the most impactable or most needy community with enough resources to make a large impact on fewer lives, than spread it thin and he lp a bad system limp along. I also think it's vital to make patients and the target audience politcally aware of the ties between their rights as citizens, their medical treatment and needs and voting. |
I wish we had a clinic here |
I wish we had a facility with exercise equipment (similar to what they have at Helen Mills Center) and an indoor lap pool (not a Y - too expensive) |
I worry about a city such a drastic and increasingly widening income intergrity |
I would like o see a community health ceneter to some low ses community; worried anout affordability |
I'm 83 and I find the area pretty well served medically and Grady is nearby. |
In terms of healthcare - I would like to see an urgent care center in this part of town. I also think we need more health services in all of our schools including things like asthma management and mental health counseling/training. School based health assessments could help us figure out why more than 10% of elementary students miss over three weeks of school each year in our area. In terms of community - I would like to see Morehouse and the AUC much more active neighbors. The campus should be welcoming and provide a community destination for sports or contemplation, students and staff should be encouraged to live in the community, and all students in local schools should all be familiar with your programs and faculty.
The campus should also work to reduce its negative footprint on the community - the car traffic is an injury and air quality hazard and it is so close to the transit station. Students and staff could support local business but they stay on campus and then leave at the end of the day. How can you be a better neighbor? |
Overall I think the community should know about the health problems that effect them. |
Our country and state need to think of good individual health as an essential part of good public health. |

Lower the crime rate and increase police presence. Some citizens can only work nights for various reasons but are afraid to because of violence in the areas |

Our city councilwoman destroyed a bike lane paid for by REI in exchange for votes from a church.
Not only did it take away a healthy and safe option for kids to get to elementary school and Morehouse College, REI has never received the courtesy of a response and the taxpayers had to pay $130,000 to have it destroyed, all of which is a disincentive for future investment in health in our community. The pastor of that church lives in Mableton yet they accused "outsiders" of trying to gentrify our neighborhood through bike lanes, as if poor people and black people don't ride bikes. As long as introducing healthy options into poor neighborhoods is call "gentrification" and used as a racial and political tool, we will not see improvement. |
Programs for our homeless members |
Provide information on where uninsured citizens can get medical assistance. |
Quarterly health fairs and encourage city to increase presence neighborhoods so residents feel safe walking. Recently one of my neighbors was shot a while trying to stop someone from stealing a neighbors vehicle. |
So few doctors, clinics, south of Interstate 20 |
Start with education, education is impossible if you cant think due to poor nutrition , starts with nutrition |
The elderly don’t have acces to information on the internet, and sometime they rarely leave their homes, it will be good to find a way to reach out to them. Maybe through a neighborhood group that’s tasked with keeping them engaged or informed. |
There needs to be more Community involvement when it comes to health different group different programs |
These are easy places to access this information. |
These are what most people look at. |

We must begin to teach children starting as young as possible--day-care/kindergarten about good health and how to obtain and maintain it. This should be done in schools, after-school programs, YMCA, Boys'Girls Clubs, Girls/Boy Scouts etc. Initiate some incentives to motivate youngsters to WANT to strive for healthy options in their day to day living. Children are often able to motivate changes in their families. |
We need more Family Restaurant !! Because there are not many !! I have to travel to Eat at a Nice restaurant !! Please get more training at South Atlanta Hospital!! We need A front gate ! With a Code to get in. Because we have so many people's that don't live in our neighborhood !! Walking around!! |

I believe that my community does not know enough about pollution. Noise pollution especially is pervasive in my neighborhood. |

HIV is on rise in both youth and seniors in my community; poor nutrition is a correctable issue through informing; air/water quality is a mitigating factor in our community health that many are not even remotely aware of |

Spread of HIV is on the rise in my community. / Men's health is still ignored in my community, machismo, ignorance and limited resources / Substance abuse is a mitigating factor in my community along with the permissive attitude about drug/alcohol use |
NPU 7 |
STD because of the high rate here. / Vilonence because of the gun shots. / Mental Health because of the constant oppression. |
NPU 7 |
Cancer has been one of our major silent killers...prevention and information on risk factors is essential in my opinion. High Blood Pressure is extremely dangerous and ties in to the poor nutrition that can be cultural in the black community. |
NPU 7 |
Violence is a major issue, people need mental health services there is a high homeless group, and people will buy junk food for breakfast in this community - not all but many |
NPU 7 |
they kill | NPU 7 |
They are important because they are the three that are most visible in my community. I see a lot of littering a lot of obesity and a lot of kids having children |
NPU 7 |
Violence prevention/education could have a positive impact in community, schools. Mental health is so common in the community. Most who suffer rarely leave the community! Men's health could possibly increase employability of many of the men in the community. |
NPU 7 |
My neighborhood has a high rate of HV and sexually transmitted diseases which is impacting the stability and development of our young people. In addition, low incomes cause them to neglect their health. |
NPU 7 |
It is my understanding that there is a silent HIV/AIDS epidemic, and therefore I feel like there needs to be more awareness. There are also too many "babies" having babies, and this will continue to make it a greater challenge for especially poor people to climg the socio-economic ladder. |
NPU 7 |
NPU 7 |
I chose Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Cancer because these are the silent killers among the African American community, the things that attack us that no one wants to, or they shy away from discussing. |
NPU 7 |
Nutrition, Diabetes & women's health are interrelated. Women predominantly control food selection for their households& influence lifelong eating patterns in their children. Those eating patterns determine overall health & weight. Overweight then begins a cascade of issues, including diabetes. |

Poor education on healthy food selection & how to eat well on a limited income. Also poor prenatal food & health choices. |
NPU 7 |
1. Discrimination against women, particularly women of color, mos particularly poor women of color. / 2. A combination of discrimination, aggressively exploitative capitalism and foodways that focus on cheap, highly caloric dense, nutritionally poor eating. / 3. The above two strongly impact obesity, as does a lived environment that doesn't include access to proper health care and opportunities for exercise. |

Have this information taught in the public schools. Kroger should not be constantly displaying at the front of the store sugary sweets for sale. |
NPU 7 |
Educate!!! We must stop assuming because some comprehend, the need is not growing. We need to start back educating persons as young as preteens on the health issues most common in their own community/homes & how to get help |
NPU 7 |
Offer free and discounted services. Also, promote awe ness and education. I think that agencies, community based organizations, schools and businesses need to be more inclusive and not so much “doing their own thing”. |
NPU 7 |
Attempt to to keep young people in school (vs. skip class or drop out) where they can be educated on health benefits, as well as continue their general education to get out of poverty and in turn address some of these health concerns. |
NPU 7 |
More awareness and community discussions/engagement | NPU 7 |
Education- small, hands on classes given in neighborhood schools, churches, etc. / Elimination of food deserts. Start local farmers markets, community gardens. Business training on how to make money with food based enterprise. |

Impact on community & self. | NPU 1 |

Obesity: At the root of many other chronic health problems (Diabetes, Cardiovascular Health, etc.) / HIV/AIDS: Still not enough supports and education in the community about prevention and treatment. / Addiction/Abuse: Challenging issues to confront and more education and support needed. |

NPU 2 |
Cancer just took my husband within 2 months of diagnosis. He was fit & ate good food. I believe environmental issues in my community lends itself to cancer, |
NPU 2 |
NUTRITION: Our diets affect almost all the other issues cited. When we learn how to eat more healthily and actually eat more healthily, we can halt most of the adverse conditions listed. People must come to learn and believe that eating better--much more fruits and vegetables and much less prepare/packaged food AND less red meat--will lead to better health. Ill health is not simply "a crap shoot"; It's what we do to ourselves. / OBESITY: Totally linked to nutrition and is the primary effect of bad nutrition and leads to many |
NPU 2 |
NPU 2 |
Environmental health - lots of cars, trucks, trains, planes generate combustion pollution and particulate matter and we're exposed to this stuff all the time since we're in the city 100% of the time / Mental health - important issue that is often overlooked / nutrition - not a lot of access to organic and fresh foods in our neighborhood / / |
NPU 2 |
The three closest neighborhoods to mine are situated between several former industrial sites at least two have been EPA condemned. Access to greenspace has been proven to extend and enhance quality of life. We also lack access to proper nutrition. There are no specialty healthfood stores. There is only one grocery for the closest seven neighborhoods and they lack a robust healthfood and nutritional supplement section. There is limited access to cost effective and quality health food. These are simple preventive healthcare measures that can greatly impact my community and they cost virtually nothing! |
NPU 2 |
Cancer - lack of appropriate treatment and supports available to people with little, no or not adequate services. |
NPU 2 |
Mental health is stigmatized in my community. Getting help and seeing a doctor to talk things out should not be seen as negative. / It is important to seek regular health exams because even if we take care of ourselves we can still get sick and early detection is the best medicine. / Littering is a large part of pollution in my neighborhood. People should understand that it causes heath issues as well. |

tHESE ARE THE PROBLEMS/ISSUES THAT PLAGUE OUR COMMUNITY. | NPU 2 |
Mental health is a concern because of the growing number of homeless people that I see on the streets of NPU-X. Obesity has people on the path to a short life span and a poor quality of life as they age. |
NPU 2 |
Asthma runs in my family both sides. | NPU 2 |
Poor mental health can make a person more vulnerable to adopt self-destructive habits. / / I hear gunshots in the neighborhood a couple of times a month, and I have neighbors who are alcoholics but want to quit. / |

womans health and reproduction are essental obesity is a problem controlled with good nutrition substance abuse | NPU 2 |
NPU 2 |

the toxins embedded in the homes (lead paint) has contributed to a large amount of mental issues which leads to erotic behavior. The foods youeat directly effects mood and brain functions if the avg diet improves so will the performance, leadto a much higher achevmemts. because black men are the most at risk for incarnation and violence. a lot of this can be linked to bad foods clouding their mind. |

the majority of the top choices have a stima associated with them which prevents people from trying to educate themselves on the subject. |

better food choices- diabetes, better information- teen pregancy & substance abuse | NPU 2 |

I am very enviromentally conscious our society needs to be more aware of the health risks associated with food over eat. Mental health is too often over looked and stigmatized. |

addressing obesity will help address other obesity related issues such as diabetes and high blood pressure. HIV/Aids disapportinatly affects african americal women and teens substance abuse is a problem in the community. |
NPU 2 |
Enviromental health ig big it takes a community to take care of our homes and future for our community. HIV/AIDS is always a concern and needs to be cured. Violence prevention is something that needs to be talked about because its happening a lot more frequently. |

I have stated these above in my rather detailed explanations. | NPU 2 |
I think there are two main causes- one being lack of knowledge. I do not believe that my community is fully aware of the resources to help with addiction problems. The other being a lack of resources. My neighborhood is not wealthy and many of our community members cannot afford or do not have time to become aware of solutions for these problems. |
NPU 2 |
lack of communication to the community and not enough investment in our community for organic, farm fresh food that is not expensive |
NPU 2 |

I think the city of Atlanta should help fund resources that help prevent disease, cleanup our brownfields, and support our community members. |
NPU 2 |
increase awareness of environmental issues and how it impacts people's health, as well as awareness and resources for mental health (whether it's stress related to mental disorders) and encourage investment in stores for these items, and investment/encouragement/resources for farmers in our neighborhood |
NPU 2 |

STD's are a huge problem in the city of Atlanta and are not discussed / Diabetes has many causes and causes many problems. / Asthma causes missed school days and that causes more problems |
NPU 3 |
Due to the lack of healthy food options in walking distance and our convenience to many fast food options, diabetes and high blood pressure might impact many residents. You can easily walk to the liquor store, Wendy's, or the gas station. In regards to mental health, I think many of our younger residents may suffer from them possibly due to over-crowding apartments and unstable households. These issues are important because I know this community can be better and with the right partners, these issues will be eliminated. |

NPU 6 |
Our Black community needs more resources and eduction | NPU 6 |
These topics are important to me because it's some of the leading cause of death in this area. | NPU 6 |
It seems as though more and more people have asthma. | NPU 6 |
NPU 6 | |
Asthma affects too many children. Substance abuse, including alcohol, are too wide spread. Obesity is a sign of public health and private health failures. |
NPU 6 |
It’s a predominantly African American community and high blood pressure is a silent killer among our people / Obesity is also another big concern. Obese parents are passing it down to the youth. / There’s a lot of residents with undiagnosed mental health issues. You see them walking down the street talking to themselves. People just view them as crazy and don’t want to deal with them but they need help as well |
NPU 6 |
Family history and lack of alternative transportation put me at risk of things like diabetes and heart disease. Also, it's amazing to me that Fulton Co is not smoke free. What is wrong with us??? |
NPU 6 |
Mental health is highly misunderstood and leads to social inequality regarding jobs and health insurance. Obesity is prevalent in the areas I work and the lack of grocery stores there is no wonder that it is an issue. Substance abuse is grossly underestimated in its lethality in our city. |
NPU 6 |
I chose Mental health because very so often do I see it regarded as a rich person problem. / Men’s health because I know men don’t seek out health problems fast enough. / And nutrition because we’re surrounded by so many unhealthy options |
NPU 6 |
Close to family | NPU 6 |
These are important in my community because they are not talked about, but have some of the biggest impact on people’s health and community. Not only do these issues hurt the community physically, but disable us from being able to be socially mobile. |
NPU 6 |
Diabetes is a common disease that people are not aware and because we are in a food desert, our neighborhood is more prone to diabetes. Also there are a lot of homeless people are who always drinking at the corner store. |
NPU 5 |
Mental health in the Black community needs to be addressed because I believe we could eliminate most problems if our mental health overall was better. |
NPU 6 |
Nutrition- lack of community resources for healthy nutritional food items. Too many fast food restaurants, based on economic level of neighborhood. / Violence - lack of safety and police presence. Lack of community code enforcement to detour blight and opportunity for birthing crime and criminal activity. / Substance Abuse - lack of safe, educational and welcoming activities for youth and residents. Lack of relationships with community youth to explore rewarding and gratifying ideas and discoveries. / |
NPU 6 |
For the population in this community, these three are common and often misunderstood | NPU 6 |

I grew u in a poverty sticken home and knew nothing about nutrition. In turn, I have been sick most of my life with auto immune and get problem ss that can be fixed and prevented by proper nutrition. We need to be educated on what our lack of respecting our worldis doing to our planet. I hear gun shots every night it breaks my heart. this world needs more love and respect. |
NPU 6 |
Because the choices I chose are the most prevalent issues I see daily. | NPU 6 |

Livable wage, affordable housing / lack of enforcement of pedestrian safety traffic laws i.e. blocking crosswalks, impeding pedestrian right of way |

More outreach and education within the community. | NPU 6 |
Inform the public, give us a choice on whether or not we want GMO foods, additives in our water and a stricter control on what we dump into the environment. (But, I also think there is nothing that can really be done considering who is president). |
NPU 6 |
NPU 6 | |
More state and federal resources. | NPU 6 |
Stress the importance of taking care of ones self. But also help the community grow in general. If people can’t get jobs or their finances don’t change, then their health will always come secondary to their living situation |
